India figures among the top 10 spam sending countries, accounting for nearly 3% of spam sent globally in the second quarter of 2008, according to enterprise security firm Secure Computing’s Internet Threats report. Spam or unsolicited e-mails sent from emerging markets is expected to grow as internet infrastructure improves.

The top 10 countries account for 55% of the world’s spam volume. Top-ranked US, with a 16.56% contribution, sends more than twice as much spam as the next largest contributor, Russia. Turkey, Brazil, Italy and China follow the top two countries. India is ranked ninth in the list.

The man who escaped from a federal prison in Florence after being convicted for sending spam e-mail killed his wife and one of their children before killing himself in an apparent murder-suicide on Thursday.

Eddie Davidson, 35, was serving a 21-month sentence for illegally sending spam over the Internet and escaped from a minimum security prison in Florence on July 20.

At around 11:15 a.m. Thursday, the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Department received a report of shots fired in the area of East Arkansas Place, at Davidson’s former home.

Although plenty of criminals have embraced spam, and corrupted thousands of machines to send out billions of messages, there was a time when spamming was unthinkable.

Long before Tim Berners-Lee and Mosaic and AOL, and other points in Internet history, the humble email came into existence during the summer of 1971. Ray Tomlinson sent a message from one machine to another in the same room.

He recently told the Times Online the idea of spam would have been unthinkable in the early days, when no more than a thousand people had email.
