Opera has taken the fight to its rivals with the alpha of Opera 10, the first browser to fully comply with the Acid3 test, according to the Norweigan company.

Opera claims the latest version of its desktop browser scores 100 out of 100 on the Acid3 test, which was created to assess whether browsers comply with a range of web standards around features such as rendering and Javascript.

In comparison Chrome 0.4 manages 79 out of 100, trailed by Firefox 3.0.4 with 71 and Internet Explorer 7, which hits a meagre 14, though IE8 is expected to improve things significantly when it launches.

Although in numbers it lags behind Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Safari, the Opera web browser is known for having a devoted fanbase. Opera has made inroads into gaming consoles and mobile platforms including the Wii, Nintendo DS, and approximately 40 million cell phones. So, you’d imagine that Opera would be a perfect match to the iPhone.

Unfortunately, Apple thinks otherwise. A New York Times story from this week says that an iPhone version of Opera failed to make it past Apple’s gatekeeper, “[Founder Jon Stephenson von Tetzchner] said that Opera’s engineers have developed a version of Opera Mini that can run on an Apple iPhone, but Apple won’t let the company release it because it competes with Apple’s own Safari browser,” the Times wrote.

Mozilla: Firefox 3 beats IE7 and Opera in memory tests

Work done to plug Firefox’s memory leaks and reduce its RAM profile has paid off, two of Mozilla’s engineers said Friday, as they claimed that the newest beta of their open-source browser uses less memory than rivals such as Internet Explorer and Opera.

According to Mozilla software engineer Stuart Parmenter, who was instrumental in managing the memory reduction work, Firefox 3.0 Beta 4 uses less memory than IE7, Opera 9.5 Beta 1 and Firefox 2.0.0.12 while it opens multiple pages. Just as importantly, the newest beta of Firefox 4 does a much better job reclaiming memory when tabs are closed than its predecessor, Firefox 2.0.0.12.
