Sun Microsystems is challenging database partner Oracle with a middleware offer to woo customers of its newly acquired BEA Systems business.

Sun has capitalized on Oracle jacking up licensing of the BEA middleware products with an offer for its own open-source suite complete with a 12-month price lock in. The offer expires on the day before Halloween, October 30, 2008.

The company is offering WebLogic or Oracle Fusion customers free adaptors to Sun’s Java CAPS 6.0 platform. The suite features an enterprise service bus (ESB), event processor, business process management and master data management. As ever, the package features Sun’s GlassFish application server and NetBeans integrated development environment (IDE).

MySQL, the open-source database maker that Sun Microsystems bought earlier this year, recently closed a $10 million deal, according to Sun CEO Jonathan Schwartz.

Schwartz noted the deal Saturday in a Twitter Q&A related to the Web 2.0 Expo.

A $10 million deal…that’s big, even by Oracle standards. It’s the sort of deal that big companies do with other big companies.

Sun’s $1B MySQL Buy May Be Its Entree Into Web 2.0 Software

As Sun Microsystems acquires MySQL AB, the popular open source database system, it’s plugging a hole in its software product line while moving into the tony Web 2.0 neighborhood.

MySQL, with an estimated $200 million in annual revenue, accounts for a small fraction of the $15 billion worldwide database market. But it’s the database most frequently used for new Web applications, particularly those for social networking, active-user-input types of sites such as Facebook.

Amazon SimpleDB: a database server for the internet

Amazon has announced SimpleDB, the latest addition to what is becoming an extensive suite of web services aimed at developers. It is now in beta.

Why bother with SimpleDB, when seemingly every web server on the planet already has access to a free instance of MySQL?

Perhaps the main reason is scalability. If demand spikes, Amazon handles the load. Second, SimpleDB is universally accessible, whereas your MySQL may well be configured for local access on the web server only. If you want an online database to use from a desktop application, this could be suitable. It should work well with Adobe AIR once someone figures out an ActionScript library. That said, MySQL and the like work fine for most web applications, my blog being one example. SimpleDB meets different needs.

Setting up mysql password is one of the essential tasks. root user is MySQL admin account. Remember Linux/UNIX login root account for your operating system and MySQL root are different. They are separate and have nothing to do with each other (indeed some admin removes root account and setup admin as mysql super user).

Method # 1
If you have never set a root password for MySQL, the server does not require a password at all for connecting as root. To setup root password for first time, use mysqladmin command at shell prompt as follows:
