While Apple CEO Steve Jobs said on Wednesday that iOS 4.1 would be coming to iPhones and iPod touches this coming week, he didn’t give a date. It seems the Apple U.K. site’s webmaster has put up some different info that in the U.S., with their site giving an exact date: Sept. 8.

The U.S. site continues to say “Coming Soon,” but we’ll assume that rather than making two mistakes (posting a date, and posting a wrong date) that the Sept. 8 is correct. It also makes sense since the new iPod touches will ship on Sept. 8, with iOS 4.1 pre-installed.

Apple’s failure to clean up old code in QuickTime leaves people running Internet Explorer (IE) vulnerable to drive-by attacks, a Spanish security researcher said today.

Ruben Santamarta, a researcher at Madrid-based Wintercore who revealed a bug in IE8 last month, today outlined the QuickTime plug-in vulnerability. Hackers only need to dupe users into visiting a malicious site hosting exploit code, said Santamarta, who added that his attack code works when someone browses with IE on a machine running Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7 that has QuickTime 7.x or the older QuickTime 6.x installed.

Santamarta’s exploit works because Apple didn’t tidy up QuickTime’s code after developers dropped the “_Marshaled_pUnk” function.

But Iron Man’s sensors can effortlessly distinguish between the innocent and the guilty, so he finds, fixes and finishes the terrorists with his mini-missiles, leaving the bewildered townspeople unharmed? OK, so you won’t pilot your own Iron Man suit. But BattleTac, a Hungarian company specializing in GPS tracking, has an app that functions as a makeshift version of Blue Force Tracker, the tech the U.S. military uses to map its friends and foes.

It’s called Layar, and it’s already available for your iPhone or Droid. Sure, this is gaming tech, but if you happen to be fighting for real near a Wi-Fi hotspot, Layar could come in handy. The app will quickly distinguish between your teammates (“blue” forces) and your enemies (“reds”) so you know who to support and who to target.

One of iTV’s most compelling (alleged) features is that it would run iOS, the same Apple operating system that powers the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. This means that iTV users could run smartphone-like apps on their big-screen HDTVs. If true, iTV would represent a major break from Apple TV, which is tightly locked into iTunes.

Netflix might very well offer one of the first iTV apps. After all, the video service already provides free applets for the iPad and iPhone/iPod touch. Netflix subscribers pay as little as $9 a month to stream an unlimited number of movies and television shows to their TVs and mobile devices.

A first glance, Netflix and iTV seem like an odd pair, particularly if reports of Apple introducing 99-cent TV show rentals are correct. In reality, though, the two services would complement one another.

Apple on Wednesday invited members of the media to its annual media-centric keynote, where it is expected to introduce new iPods and an updated Apple TV, set for Sept. 1 in San Francisco, Calif.

The event will be held next Wednesday and will start at 10 a.m. Pacific Time, 1 p.m. Eastern, and will be held at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Alluding to the music-themed nature of the event, the invitation includes an acoustic guitar with a sound hole in the shape of an Apple logo.

The announcement dispels an earlier report that the event would be held on Sept. 7. In recent days, a firestorm of rumors and speculation have centered around a supposed new Apple TV, perhaps dubbed iTV, starting at $99. Both Bloomberg and The New York Times have cited anonymous sources as stating that Apple is currently negotiating with content providers to offer 99 cent TV episode rentals.
