Apple Inc., embarrassed after a blogger obtained an iPhone prototype lost by an engineer in a bar, probably will limit the number of early devices it gives employees, analysts said.
Technology blog Gizmodo.com paid $5,000 for the device and published photos of it on April 19. Gizmodo later complied with a request from Apple that the blog give back the iPhone.
The loss is a rare slip-up for a company that closely guards new products before they ship. Apple has expanded the number of people allowed to carry unreleased gadgets in recent years as it steps up production of mobile devices that must be tested widely to ensure they work on wireless networks, said a former manager who asked not to be identified. Apple now may tighten the circle.
