India figures among the top 10 spam sending countries, accounting for nearly 3% of spam sent globally in the second quarter of 2008, according to enterprise security firm Secure Computing’s Internet Threats report. Spam or unsolicited e-mails sent from emerging markets is expected to grow as internet infrastructure improves.
The top 10 countries account for 55% of the world’s spam volume. Top-ranked US, with a 16.56% contribution, sends more than twice as much spam as the next largest contributor, Russia. Turkey, Brazil, Italy and China follow the top two countries. India is ranked ninth in the list.
Globally, spam volumes declined in Q2 but on a year-on-year basis, jumped 280%, the report says. Spam volumes declined 10% sequentially in Q2.
